stephanie mei huang: (self-portraits) as neither donkey nor horse. w/ Julie Tolentino + Amma Ateria

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture presents the publication launch of (self-portraits as) neither donkey nor horse, a collection of recent work by stephanie mei huang, curated by Hauser & Wirth summer resident Allison C Smith.

For the publication release, huang collaborates with artist Julie Tolentino and sound artist Amma Ateria. huang reads from their personal artist’s essay, a self-theory, followed by a collaborative work engaging with Tolentino’s multi-decade study and practice with Chinese herbs and Eastern bodywork through a moxibustion— the burning of moxa, a mugwort, and artemisia (which huang spent this past spring foraging), on meridian points on huang’s body in a fortification of the yellow femme’s somatics— accompanied by live electroacoustic / binaural beats / equal-loudness contour sound works by Ateria.

IMAGING THE AVANT-GARDE: Taiwan's Experimental Films of the 1960s

In 2016, curators at the Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF) conducted an exhaustive search for Taiwan’s experimental films of the 1960s, unearthing a striking body of largely forgotten works. Highly innovative and reflective of contemporary Taiwanese politics and culture, the works themselves embody a formal diversity which not only expands canons and challenges the definition of cinema but also sketches the rough edges of a generation’s own sense of modern film. Tonight’s program presents a selection of films from TIDF’s comprehensive series, accompanied by live musical performance by Amma Ateria. Program curated by Emily Chao as part of Taiwan International Documentary Festival 2019 on Tour.

IMA is the sound project of Nava Dunkelman x Amma Ateria, marching forth with fearless percussion, stark electronics, and filmic poetic vocals. Deconstructing and dissolving heavy music through restraint and release, IMA strives for a balance between meticulous detailed precision of instrumentation, with the chaos of densities driven to brinks of breakage situated by beautification in between. IMA has been presented in residency at The Stone, New York City (2016), and San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, SF (2016). Performances and collaborations include Ikue Mori, Pauchi Sasaki, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Matmos, Zeena Parkins, Erik Friedlander, Brian Chase, and many others.

Full: Spaces Programmed by Land and Sea

https://bampfa.org/event/full-spaces

Paul Clipson, Amma Ateria, and Kevin Corcoran improvise in sound and light, bringing a spontaneous identity to the space as filmed image combines with live electroacoustic music. Paul Clipson creates densely layered, stream-of-consciousness films, responding to the temporal qualities of musical composition. Electroacoustic composer and improviser Amma Ateria, a.k.a. Jeanie Aprïlle Tang, orchestrates the illusion of spaces by using field recordings blended with modulations and synthetic frequencies. Percussionist Kevin Corcoran extends the sonic possibilities of instruments, emphasizing textural sound, sympathetic vibration, sustained tones, and the use of found objects.
